What is regenerative medicine? This is a rapidly advancing area of medicine that focuses on the use of the body’s own systems to treat and prevent disease. As we continue to age, the incidence of age-related diseases such as heart disease and arthritis increases. In response to this increase in longevity, researchers have become interested in developing an effective treatment or preventive method.

 

What is regenerative medicine? It is a discipline that studies how healthy tissues and organs can be restored or “re-engineered” in order to cure, treat, or prevent disease. Often times, when we suffer an injury or illness, our bodies are not able to heal itself to a degree that will allow us to resume normal functions. However, other body systems can “self-heal” so that the injured organs can resume their normal function. This is how regenerative medicine focuses its attention.

 

Can regenerative medicine be used to prevent or treat any chronic diseases? It has been established that the body has the ability to regenerate tissue and cells. In fact, it is estimated that about 30 percent of all cells in the human body can be regenerated. What is considered to be chronic diseases is usually those that involve diseases that affect the entire body.

 

How is this achieved? regenerative medicine uses the concept of organ transplantation and cell therapy to assist in the treatment and prevention of diseases. One of the more popular techniques is cord blood banking. This is where stem cells from your baby’s umbilical cord and placenta are stored for use in the event of a birth defect or illness. In addition to saving the child’s life, this technique can also save the life of someone who suffers from a debilitating disease like cancer.

 

How are these stem cells used? Stem cells from your child’s umbilical cord are used to create new stem cells within the body to replace damaged tissues. There are multiple uses for these cells and therapies. While this is considered to be alternative medicine, it has been widely accepted throughout the medical community as a legitimate form of treatment. What is regenerative medicine exactly though?

 

The main goal of this form of medicine is to provide new tissue and cells to the area of injury. Injuries can range from minor burns to major surgeries. No matter what the injury is, the regenerative medicine approaches all of them from two perspectives. First, they attempt to fix whatever is wrong with the body. Second, they are attempting to replace the injured area with healthy new cells. What this means is that they use different techniques in order to achieve their goals.

 

For example, one type of regenerative medicine uses lipogems to inject into the area of injury. Lipogems are small plastic tubes that have been injected with fat from a patient’s own body. These cells are designed to be a replica of the targeted cells and are then implanted into the targeted area. This form of surgery is often combined with a procedure known as autologous lipid transfer where, instead of lipogems, blood cells are harvested and transplanted into the area. This provides more cells at once and leads to a higher success rate at filling in the gaps.

 

Another part of regenerative medicine attempts to rebuild the targeted organ or tissue. If the organ or tissue is killed, this form of surgery attempts to replace it with living tissue. Most commonly, this involves grafting together organs such as kidneys, lungs, hearts and even eyelids. It also includes using synthetic tissues instead of the living ones. This approach has a high success rate when it comes to repairing and rebuilding the organ or tissue because it uses living cells to build it up.
